Social Media Ambassador Spotlight: Bieke Bekaert

Tell us about your professional background.

I obtained my Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Ghent University in Belgium in 2018. Following graduation, I began my PhD at Ghent University, focusing on gene editing in the mouse/human germline and human pluripotent disease stem cell models. Currently, I am a post-doctoral researcher at the Peripheral Neuropathy Research Group at UAntwerp, located in Belgium, led by Prof. Vincent Timmerman.

My primary research involves investigating Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease using various human neuromuscular 3D stem cell models.

What drew you to the field of Peripheral Neuropathy?

I have always been fascinated by the nervous system and its role in controlling the body. I became aware of the current gaps in peripheral nerve research and the lack of a cure for many patients. Motivated by this, I decided to apply my expertise in stem cell and 3D model research to investigate peripheral neuropathies, with a specific focus on CMT, using neuromuscular 3D stem cell models.

What motivated you to apply for the PNS Social Media Ambassador role?

My motivation to apply for the PNS Social Media Ambassador position stemmed from my previous positive experience in social media management and assisting in planning academic events during my role as Junior Deputy for the Stem Cells Special Interest Group at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. After completing my PhD, I chose to specialize in 3D stem cell models, particularly focusing on CMT. During this time, I encountered PNS which connects scientists, physicians and healthcare providers to advance research and treatments for peripheral nerve diseases. Witnessing PNS’s significant international impact and extensive reach, I felt compelled to apply for the PNS Social Media Ambassador role.

In my role as Social Media Ambassador, I aim to build upon Dr. Robert Prior’s excellent work by creating engaging content for PNS’ social media platforms. My goal is to create opportunities to encourage interaction between all members and to strengthen our community’s platform.

What are your interests / hobbies outside of your research?

When I am not performing research, I enjoy reading books and perfecting new baking recipes.
