Memorial Announcement: Dr. Laura Feltri, Former PNS President
It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Dr. Laura Feltri on 25 December 2023. Dr. Feltri was the president of the Peripheral Nerve Society until her resignation on 2 November due to a glioma, which she fought quietly and valiantly for several years. She passed peacefully in her hometown of Milan, Italy, surrounded by her husband Dr. Lawrence Wrabetz, their children, and several friends and scientific collaborators. Dr. Feltri was an unwavering supporter of the PNS, serving on the Scientific Program and Education Committees, and the JPNS Editorial Board. She was a PNS Board Member between 2009 and 2013 and President-Elect/President between 2021 and 2023.
As a leading peripheral nerve scientist and AAAS Fellow, she made seminal discoveries while leading research laboratories in Italy and the United States together with her husband Larry. She unraveled molecular mechanisms underlying axonal sorting during development and the implications for Schwann cell-axon communication. She also generated CMT1B mouse models and the P0-Cre transgenic line for Schwann cell specific gene inactivation, which is widely used by the peripheral nerve scientific community.
As a mentor and colleague, she trained and inspired many of us. She was determined and passionate in life and science, as well as calm and generous, always lending a helping hand or simply a smile.
During her tenure as President of the PNS, Dr Feltri’s priorities were to make the PNS a truly globally inclusive society, with an overarching goal of supporting young scientists and physicians. She will be deeply missed. We will be honoring her life and work in Montréal.
